Coach Smiley and Family

HCSS Welcomes Darius Smiley as Teacher and Coach

The Heard County Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of Darius Smiley to the position of weightlifting teacher at Heard County High School. During the current statewide teacher shortage, Heard County had been looking to fill a weight training teacher position to help with the large number of students who want to enroll in a weight training course during the school day. “We are excited to have someone of Coach Smiley’s caliber join our staff and help lead our students,” stated Heard County School Superintendent Rodney Kay. “He will be a great addition to the OneBraveNation.”

Unlike most other small school systems, Heard County has a large number of both male and female athletes who compete in high school athletics. This creates a high demand for weight training courses at Heard County High School. By adding Smiley to the staff, school leaders are ensuring that any student who wants to enroll in weight training can find a spot.

Besides teaching weight training, Smiley will also serve as offensive coordinator for the Heard County High School varsity football program. Smiley’s background in football is well documented, starting with his time as an All-State quarterback at Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, Florida. Smiley received a football scholarship to Georgia Southern University, where he played both quarterback and wide receiver.

After graduating from college, Smiley entered the coaching profession and served as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Riverdale Military Academy in Gainesville, GA. He later coached quarterbacks and running backs at Central High School in Carrollton, and was later promoted to the position of offensive coordinator. After briefly leaving Central for a short period to coach wide receivers at Newnan High School, Smiley returned to Central High School and has served as their head coach for the past six years. During his tenure at Central, Smiley was key in leading the football program to the two greatest offensive seasons in school history.

“Coach Smiley is someone that I have respected for many years and to have him come on board with us is such a blessing to our entire school system,” claimed Heard County Athletic Director and varsity head football coach Shane Lasseter. “I am extremely excited to coach with him, learn from him and to get him involved in our kids' lives. Our school and athletic programs are better today because he is here.”

Coach Smiley is married to Brigette, and they have two children: a son, Calin (9),and a daughter, Emery (6). When he is not coaching, he enjoys spending time with his family and watching his kids participate in sports.
