For Immediate Release:  Rodney Kay, Superintendent

Special Week Honors Georgia’s School Boards

The Heard County School District is joining in a statewide celebration this

week to salute the efforts of local school board members. The week of

March 15-19, 2021 has been proclaimed School Board

Appreciation Week in Georgia. The weeklong observance calls attention

to the contributions of local boards of education.

Citizens elect board members to represent the community’s voice on education matters and to set the vision for the school district.  Superintendent, Rodney Kay had the following to say, “Our board spends countless hours fulfilling its responsibilities and working together to continually improve our education system.  They are a dedicated group who constantly try to balance the demands of providing the best for our students while also balancing the responsibility to the local taxpayer by being mindful of the local millage rate.”  Kay also stated, “I take great pride in working with these five individuals.  They have been able to maintain a steady millage rate for over a decade while we continue to push new boundaries in our innovative practices.  The foresight of this board to work with us to provide 1:1 technology for students has been instrumental in being able to provide digital learning opportunities for our children.  They have continuously looked to improve this school system, but have stepped cautiously so the local taxpayer has not been overly burdened.  We were very proud to hear SmartAsset recently named Heard County as the #1 county in Georgia whose taxpayers got the “best bang for their buck”.  Kay finished by commending the board for the contributions to all aspects of education.  “They treat every aspect of our school system equally.  We have invested in fine arts, performing arts, and athletics.  They have worked with district leaders and have whole-heartedly bought into our 3-E initiative (Employment, Enlistment, Enrollment).  Our kids are the ones who benefit, and we have a board who lives out our motto of Putting Kids First.”

The men and women serving our school district are:

Chairman, Mr. Roger Harrod

Vice Chairman, Mr. Mike Crockett

Mrs. Ashley Awbrey

Mr. Greg Holcomb

Mr. Chad Wood

As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible

for setting educational policies, employing the superintendent to provide

buildings and equipment, operate a transportation system and disbursing of

school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as

advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and

decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.

The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) sponsors the celebration.
