A BRIEF HISTORY OF EPHESUS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In the early part of the century, students in Ephesus Community met in a one-room school house near the Ephesus Baptist Church. Some residents remember attending this school as children (circa 1907).
The Baptist church was also used as a school in the early years.
A two-story school building was built in Ephesus in 1923. There were four classrooms and an auditorium in this building. The Loftin Masonic Lodge occupied half of the auditorium from 1923 to 1954.
A two-classroom building was built in 1936 on the south side, and in 1938 another two-classroom building was constructed on the north side of the 1923 building. A lunchroom and canning plant were built on the campus in the early 1940s. A teacher residence building (called a teacherage) was constructed in 1948.
The old buildings have been replaced by a main classroom building built in 1954. This building holds grades Kindergarten through four, the principal's office and a lunchroom/auditorium. A media center including fifth and sixth grade classrooms, a seventh and eighth grade building, and a new gymnasium were all constructed during the 1980s.
Before the gymnasium was built, students played basketball outside, first on a clay court and later on a cement court.
Mr. O. D. Janney served as principal for the longest duration and doubled as a teacher for most of that time.
